Lynnefit #1 – AN OFFICIAL BOOTLEG
Liner Notes by musician & bootlegger Dan Haley

This collection of songs comes from an evening of music celebrating and benefitting Lynn Conover’s second (and hopefully, final) hip replacement. The evening was Thursday, July 3rd, 2014 at Rock Creek Tavern in Hillsboro, OR. The Rock Creek Tavern is where Lynn’s electric band, Gravel, plays on the first Thursday of every month. Lynn was the first musician to ever play at Rock Creek Tavern and has been playing regular gigs there since 1979!

When Lynn’s friends and fans reached out to the Jeremy Wilson Foundation to ask for fund raising assistance to help her during the 2 months recovery time that would follow her operation, I arranged to hold a Night of Portland Stars musical event at Lauerlthirst Public House in Portland on August 31st, her birthday (many thanks to Lewi Longmire!). Lynn then thought of using July’s Gravel appearance as another fund raiser to cater to her many fans who are also her neighbors up on Freak Mountain to which was added the duo of Lynn & Jimmy Boyer opening the night.

On this collection, we’ve put the songs that that we have easy clearance for, originals and tunes by people we knew and could ask. It was marvelous that we were able to contact Ed Sanders of Fugs who gave permission to use his musical arrangement for the William Blake poem, How Sweet I Roamed From Field To Field! This, she learned of course, from listening to The Fugs classic first album. We placed the songs chronologically from evening’s beginning to end, 6 from the duo and 9 from Gravel (track 11 is actually 2 Lynn Conover originals back to back).

PLEASE NOTE: Though the album was professionally mastered (as a donation to Lynn) by Kevin Nettlingham at nettlinghamaudio.com The first 7 tracks have a lot of audience noise on them as the recording was made using a two-track Zoom Recorder that was situated in the audience (ie., why it’s a BOOTLEG.) The producers of the album feel this creates a realistic ambiance of what it is to experience a working song writer like Lynn Conover in the true environment where 99.9% of her music has been made over the last 30 years. A genuine moment captured in time. We hope you will buy the album to support Lynn and let yourself enjoy this LIVE PIECE OF ART! It will carry you away!!

MORE ABOUT THE MUSICIANS:

Lynn Conover has been a regular on the Portland acoustic music scene since 1985, as member of bands such as The Welfare Ranch Rodeo, Bazza’s Shelftalkers and her duos with Little Sue and with Jimmy Boyer as well as fronting her own bands. She has several solo and group CDs under her belt (lynnconover.bandcamp.com ) She penned the songs, I’m Going Back, Wild To Be Alive, For Miss M, Florida, Rag Tag Devil and Temple Dogs.

Jimmy Boyer (author of It Happens Everyday, Sweet Wine Ragtime Bitters, Whenever You Call Me By My Name and Here I Come Again) came to Portland from Flagstaff, Arizona in the late ‘80s and quickly carved a niche for himself as world class singer, guitarist and writer American Roots classics. For the past 10+ years, he’s a member of The Freak Mountain Ramblers, a highly celebrated, Portland-based, rockin’ combo. Jimmy made CDs with the Freaks and has made a couple under his own name. He and Lynn have been collaborating musically since just about the moment he arrived in town, They have been performing as a duo at Biddy McGraw’s Irish Pub the first Friday of every month. When regular Gravel member, Stevie James Wright was unable to attend this gig, we asked Jim Boyer to fill his shoes.

Dan Haley (writer of these notes.) I have been a musician in Portland since 1978. The founder of Ed & The Boats, I’ve been in many conglomerations and have several recordings under my own name ( danhaley.bandcamp.com ). In 1988, Lynn asked me to help her make a cassette of songs on which she could sing vocal harmonies with someone to give her Mom for Christmas. Those 20 songs became the Urban Hayride, birthed a fine trio of the same name and were the foundation for our live work for decades to follow.

Bob Wadle is a bassist extraordinaire who graced the Portland Scene in the early ‘80s as part of the Art Rock trio, Incognation. He’s also played guitar in Ed & The Boats with Dan Haley as well as bass in Karaoke From Hell Band and many others. He wrote and sings lead on the song, Amelia.

Louis Lozada is Gravel’s drummer. A student of Carleton Jackson, Louis never stops learning and creates amazing space for this band to place their psychedelic sound installations.

Jeremy Wilson is a longtime musician who’s solo work and bands Dharma Bums and Pilot, and now his 501(c)3 non-profit musicians’ health and services organization, The Jeremy Wilson Foundation, has left an indelible mark on the Pacific NW music scene these last 30 years.
